The position is for a full-time Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PHMNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) working in the Emergency Department at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). The role involves collaborating with Emergency Department (ED) providers to assist in the triage and management of psychiatric patients presenting to the MUSC ED, under the supervision of a psychiatrist. The APP will be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes ED-based psychiatrists, social workers, and other Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) as part of the Mental Health Integrated Care Coordination and Education (ICCE) within the Department of Psychiatry. The position also includes services within the EmPATH (Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing) unit in Shawn Jenkins.
Responsibilities
•Provide direct care to psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department.
•Take comprehensive histories and perform physical examinations.
•Evaluate and treat patients based on diagnostic test results and clinical guidelines.
•Perform therapeutic procedures as per approved privileges.
•Initiate referrals and consult with attending or collaborating physicians.
•Document and bill for direct care provided.
•Utilize evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
•Participate in quality improvement activities and clinical research.
•Support accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities.
•Engage in professional development and continuing education.
•Precept students and facilitate learning for new team members.
•Manage care for assigned patient caseload and monitor treatment plans.
Requirements
•Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program or Nurse Practitioner program.
•Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Physician Assistant or PMHNP in South Carolina.
•Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
•Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
•Two years of clinical experience, with at least one year in a specialty area of care.
