Shrub Oak International School ) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment.
We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of students across the spectrum, and our curriculum is based on the most advanced and successful evidence-based clinical and academic approaches in ASD education.
The Pines at Shrub Oak is 24-bed, coeducational, interim placement for students on the autism spectrum who may need significant psychiatric support and stabilization before transitioning to a less restrictive environment.
Student at the Pines receive psychiatric services in addition to the academic and life skills instruction in a safe, supportive environment with a 2:1 student to staff ratio.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) plays a vital role in supporting the overall well-being, care, and treatment of students at The Pines.
Working in close collaboration with The Pines leadership and interdisciplinary staff—including clinicians, teachers, nurses, occupational therapists, and direct-care supervisors—the PNP ensures that students receive comprehensive, individualized psychiatric care tailored to their unique needs.
This role involves conducting thorough assessments, diagnosing mental and emotional conditions, and designing evidence-based treatment plans to support students' overall health and development.

The PNP is responsible for prescribing and overseeing psychotherapeutic treatments or medications, carefully monitoring progress, and adjusting care plans as necessary.
Additionally, this position requires continuous engagement with students, families, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive, holistic approach to care.
Through data analysis, ongoing research, and participation in meetings and committees, the PNP stays current with advancements in the field and contributes to the evolution of best practices in psychiatric treatment.
Given the sensitive nature of the role, discretion and independent judgment are essential, as the PNP will have access to confidential student information.
Furthermore, the PNP provides on-call psychiatric nursing support for crisis management and remains actively involved in developing strategies to enhance student mental health and well-being.
Prescribe, direct, or administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, and/or or behavioral disorders
Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social or medical history obtained from the student, family members and/or other professionals
Design, implement, oversee and manage individualized care plans, using a variety of treatments
Collaborate with The Pine's interdisciplinary co-lead teams, including Clinicians, Teachers, Nurses, OT, and Direct-Care Supervisors
Will work closely with other healthcare professionals as needed and required per Shrub Oak policies and practices to discuss treatment plans and progress as needed and required
Analyze and evaluate patient data or test findings to diagnose nature or extent of mental and/or physical disorders
Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to determine effectiveness of treatments or therapies and approaches
Meet with students to assess general physical, mental and emotional condition(s).
Advise or inform guardians, relatives, or significant others of student's conditions or treatment.
Remain current of research, advances and related topics concerning mental, emotional, or behavioral states or disorders
Prepare reports summarizing patient diagnostic or care activities
Attend meetings, and serve on committees to promote, maintain and share learnings and progress in the field
Provide on-call psychiatric nursing support to manage crisis as needed/ scheduled
Handle any and all other additional responsibilities as needed and required

Required
Active PMHNP (Psychiatric, Mental Health, Nurse Practitioner) license in good standing.
Graduate degree (Master's with APRN certification or Doctorate) in mental health nursing.
Minimum of three 3 years of experience working as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in pediatric/adult psychiatry.
Experience working with individuals on the autism spectrum or those with developmental disabilities.
Experience handling complex medical, emotional, and psychological situations with a holistic approach toward achieving sustained improvement, well-being, and regulation.
Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, including clinicians, educators, and direct-care staff.
Experience managing responsibilities in a fast-paced, high-volume setting with shifting priorities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to use internal database management software.
Ability to meet physical demands, including frequent standing, walking, talking, hearing, and using hands to operate a phone and computer.
Ability to complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools (TCIS) in its entirety
Preferred
Experience in a special education or residential school setting, particularly with students requiring psychiatric support and stabilization.
Familiarity with evidence-based psychiatric and behavioral interventions specific to autism spectrum disorders and co-occurring conditions.
Knowledge of sensory integration strategies and therapeutic approaches within a structured, supportive environment.
Prior experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
Previous participation in research, training, or professional development activities related to child and adolescent psychiatry or special education.
Experience in a boarding school environment, particularly with domestic and international students.
Knowledge of psychopharmacology and medication management
