Pediatric Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) — Job Description
Fun, vibrant pediatric psychiatry and counseling office, with a small handful of adult patients as well. We strive for our clients to leave feeling that they have been truly heard. We often find ourselves setting up race tracks, throwing a ball, or playing games with the client, all while we discuss their concerns, triumphs, challenges and medications. An ideal appointment is one in which effective med and mental health management have occurred, has not felt clinical or sterile, and the experience has been a good one for the patient.

•Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment (medication management and brief psychotherapy) for children and adolescents (typically ages 0–18). You may also see adult patients.
•Collaborate with pediatricians, therapists, schools, families, and multidisciplinary teams to develop and monitor individualized care plans that support mental, behavioral, and developmental health.
Key responsibilities
•Conduct psychiatric evaluations, history-taking, mental status exams, and risk assessments.

Prescribe, initiate, adjust, and monitor psychotropic medications; manage side effects and interactions.
•Provide brief psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., supportive therapy, psychoeducation, family-focused interventions); refer for specialized psychotherapy when indicated.
•Coordinate care with primary care providers, therapists, schools, social services, and community resources.
•Perform crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, and safety planning.
•Document clinical encounters, treatment plans, informed consent, and medication management in the EHR according to legal and organizational standards.
•Provide age-appropriate patient and family education about diagnosis, treatment options, and community supports.
•Maintain compliance with state regulations, federal regulations (controlled substances, consent, confidentiality), and governing body regulations (ANCC, et al).
Qualifications
•Master's or Doctoral degree in Nursing with specialization in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) from an accredited program.
•National certification as PMHNP (e.g., ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health NP).
•Active RN and APRN/NP state license with prescriptive authority required.
•DEA registration as required for prescribing.
•Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; additional certifications (e.g., Child/Adolescent Mental Health training) preferred.
