This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, up to $200,000 & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Major duties and responsibilities of the position: Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and other modalities. Provides patient and family education on medical/MH conditions, preventive measures, and prescribed treatments. Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other MH and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate), in treatment plan development. Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Counsels and treats patients with mental health conditions. Orders and interprets labs, tests, and diagnostic studies. Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services. Prescribes medications and devices according to standardized procedures Completes full intake mental health evaluations, when appropiate. Provides individual and group psychotherapy interventions as appropriate Participates in performance improvement activities to enhance mental health care services. Assesses and intervenes for urgent and emergent mental health and medical conditions. Provides support and consultation to other outpatient clinics in areas of expertise. Physician consultation will be obtained for non-emergent situations when the nurse practitioner is managing a medical or psychiatric condition that is not resolving as anticipated, adjustments in medication/therapy have not brought about expected improvements, or any time the nurse practitioner seeks additional expertise on providing appropriate treatment for a specific condition. Documentation in the electronic health record is completed timely and follows standardized procedures. Serves as a preceptor for graduate nurse practitioner students. Demonstrates clinical competency for the position. Exemplifies the ICARE core values of-Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence. Performs other duties as assigned.
