The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides advanced mental health care for Veterans experiencing chronic pain. This role integrates psychiatric expertise with pain management strategies to address psychological, emotional, and behavioral aspects of pain. The PMHNP collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to improve patient quality of life through evidence-based interventions. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for Veterans with chronic pain, including mental status exams and psychosocial assessments. Diagnose psychiatric disorders using DSM-5 criteria and identify co-occurring conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders. Develop individualized treatment plans integrating behavioral health and pain management goals. Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, considering interactions with analgesics and monitoring for side effects. Provide brief psychotherapy and pain coping interventions (e.g., CBT for chronic pain, mindfulness strategies, sleep hygiene). Perform suicide risk assessments and implement safety plans when indicated. Order and interpret labs and diagnostics related to psychotropic medication monitoring. Participate in pain management team meetings and case conferences. Coordinate care with pain specialists, primary care providers, pharmacists, physical therapists, psychologists, and social workers. Provide consultative input on psychiatric comorbidity management in chronic pain populations. Educate patients and families on the relationship between mental health and chronic pain. Promote non-pharmacologic strategies and Whole Health resources. Contribute to pain program protocols and quality improvement initiatives. Support performance improvement priorities related to mental health and pain care. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).Comply with HIPAA, VA policies, and Release of Information (ROI) requirements. Complete mandatory training and facility competencies. Ability to conduct telehealth visits; occasional travel to CBOCs may be required.
