Physician - Geriatrics & Extended Care

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. The Richmond Veterans Affairs Medical Center is searching for a Physician to provide patient care in Geriatrics clinics and Community Living Center (equivalent to nursing home care). Physician will serve patient population with medical and psychiatric comorbidities. Physician will lead the interdisciplinary team to achieve patient-centered goals. Physician may practice in all patient demographics, provide trainee education, participate in scholarly activity, and is required to participate in quality improvement activities. Department description: Geriatrics and Extended Care (GEC) service has programs in outpatient geriatrics, Community Living Center (CLC)/nursing home care, Home-Based Primary Care, Inpatient and Outpatient Palliative Care, hospice care, transitional care, non-institutional care, and State Veteran Home partnership. Geriatrics and HPM fellows, Internal Medicine residents and medical students from Virginia Commonwealth University complete their rotations with GEC faculty. Provider primary medical care to a group of patients in Community Living Center and Transitional Care program. Review, approval and focused oversight of Non-Institutional Care programs. Collaborates daily with the interdisciplinary team (IDT), referral sources and all stakeholders. Participates in program development, quality improvement, and systems redesign projects; required to follow through with projects and show evidence of completed projects. Provides effective collaboration and leadership to interdisciplinary teams and administrative staff. Supervises clinical staff, to include a nurse navigator, nurse practitioner and physician assistant. Provides collaborative physician coverage in GEC programs including non-institutional care programs and contract community nursing home program. Provides guidance and coaching as needed to other Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and other interdisciplinary staff in GEC and referral sources. Completes medical records and encounters timely and accurately. Participates in educational activities for all trainees, i.e., curriculum development, bedside teaching, formal didactics, and just-in-time teaching. Participates in committees, Root Cause Analysis, data analysis and quality improvement projects. Completes Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations and all peer reviews accurately and timely. Addresses patient/family concerns in a timely manner. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday thru Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; with shared on call responsibilities for evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
