The organization is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner for a residency opportunity in outpatient care that supports early-career clinicians as they build skill, judgment, and confidence in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Position summary
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Residency Program is designed for a first year PMHNP who is ready to grow in a structured clinical setting. This 12-month program combines direct patient care, routine supervision, cohort support, and team-based learning in an outpatient environment.
The clinician will conduct psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and diagnosis, creating personalized treatment plans for children and adolescents, which may include prescribing medicines and other treatments. Upon successful completion of the residency requirements, participants will join the Blackbird Clinical Services team for an additional two-year period following their residency, for a total commitment of three years.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and diagnosis for children and adolescents in an outpatient setting.
- Create personalized treatment plans, which may include prescribing medicines and other treatments.
- Collaborate closely with other healthcare professionals including psychotherapists on an integrated treatment plan and medication management to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
- Provide education and consultation for patients and their families.
- Manage diagnostic testing, including digital and lab results.
- Maintain thorough records of patient meetings and progress and maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA regulations.
- Participate in weekly team and supervisory clinical meetings.
- Meet with residency cohort and supervisor to discuss progress and challenges on a routine basis.
- Work from the clinic in {city}, {state} up to 2 days a week as needed.
- Perform other clinical-related activities as assigned.
Required qualifications
- National certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Master’s degree from an accredited nursing program.
- Graduated within the last approximately 12 months or has less than 1 year of work experience as a PMHNP.
- Active PMHNP license in Pennsylvania, or on track to receive it by the time residency begins.
- Active DEA in Pennsylvania, or on track to receive it by the time residency begins.
- Adolescent psychiatric evaluation experience.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a collaborative, team-based setting while also practicing with appropriate independence.
- Openness to feedback and a strong desire to learn and grow in a supportive clinical community.
- Commitment to Blackbird Health’s mission and interest in changing the landscape of behavioral health for youth.
- Ability to meet the full program commitment, including the 12-month residency and the additional two-year period with the Blackbird Clinical Services team after successful completion.
Preferred qualifications
- Strong interest in child and adolescent outpatient psychiatry.
- Comfort engaging patients and families with clarity, empathy, and professionalism.
- Experience coordinating care across clinical disciplines.
- Demonstrated organization in documentation, follow-up, and management of clinical information.
- Readiness to contribute thoughtfully in case review, supervision, and group learning discussions.
Schedule
This is a full-time residency role with a 40-hour weekly schedule. The position includes hybrid work, with flexibility to work in person at the Pittsburgh, PA clinic up to 2 days a week as needed.
Twelve of the 40 weekly hours are required during peak after school hours, defined as after 4 pm ET during the week or any time on a weekend. The role also includes regular participation in weekly team and supervisory clinical meetings, along with routine cohort and supervisor check-ins.
Compensation and benefits
$100,000-112,000
